Digital Smile Design

What is most feared in aesthetic dental treatments is an irreversible decision. Once structure has been removed from the teeth, it is not possible to return to the former state; for this reason, seeing the result before giving approval is the patient’s most natural expectation. The smile design mock-up stage meets exactly this need. As DijiDent Oral and Dental Health Polyclinic, in aesthetic treatments in Türkiye we regard this stage as the most concrete tool for making the decision together with you.

What Is a Mock-up?

A mock-up is the application of the approved digital design over your teeth with a temporary material. A transfer template is prepared from the design model, and through this template the material is placed directly over your existing teeth. In suitable cases, this can be done without removing any structure from the teeth; at the end of the application, the material is removed and your teeth remain as they were before.

Why Is Seeing It on Screen Not Enough?

A design on screen is a two-dimensional visual experience. A smile, however, is a dynamic phenomenon: lip movement while speaking, the amount of teeth revealed when laughing and the appearance under different lighting conditions cannot be fully evaluated on screen. A mock-up, on the other hand, allows you to experience the result on your own face, with your own movements.

What Should You Evaluate During the Trial?

  • Tooth length: The amount visible at rest and when smiling.
  • Width and form: Whether the teeth look angular or rounded.
  • Midline: Its harmony with the center line of your face.
  • Lip support: How the upper lip sits.
  • Speech: The feeling when saying S, F and V sounds.
  • Bite: Whether there is discomfort when biting.

We recommend that you do not rush this evaluation. Taking photographs from different angles, going outside to look in daylight and getting the opinion of someone you trust will calm your decision.

Not Just an Aesthetic Trial

The mock-up has another clinical function, and this is often overlooked. In tooth preparation carried out while the targeted form is in the mouth, the amount of preparation is determined by taking this form as a reference. In this way, the aim is to remove only as much structure from the tooth as necessary. In preparations done without a reference, the risk of removing more tissue than necessary to achieve the targeted thickness increases. Preservation of tooth tissue is decisive for long-term dental health.

Making Expectations Concrete

Another benefit is communication. Expressions such as “a bit more natural” or “not too white” are understood differently by different people. The mock-up transforms these abstract descriptions into a concrete reference. The agreed result is now defined not in words but by a goal verified with the eyes.

The Opinion of Those Close to You

We recommend that you bring your spouse or someone you trust with you to the trial stage. When looking at our own face, it takes time to get used to change; an outside eye can evaluate the balance more objectively. However, do not forget that the final decision is yours: you are the one who will carry your smile every day.

The Revision Stage

Every objection you raise during the trial is valuable for updating the design. If the teeth are too long, they are shortened; if you find them too prominent, the form is softened; if your color expectation is different, this is noted. Although corrections made at this stage require additional time, they are much easier than changes made after the permanent restoration has been produced.

Can It Be Applied in Every Case?

A mock-up is particularly meaningful in aesthetic treatments of the front region. In cases with a great deal of structure loss, or where the teeth are positioned forward or crowded, the application may be limited; in these situations, orthodontic preparation may be needed first. In addition, an evaluation made with temporary restorations can serve a similar function. Suitability is determined by clinical examination.

Frequently Asked Questions

It is not recommended because the temporary material is fragile. The evaluation is usually completed in the clinic.

In suitable cases, it can be applied without preparation. Your dentist will explain the situation according to your case.

It is usually evaluated and removed within the same session. In some cases, short-term use may be planned.

Yes, we recommend it. Photographs taken in different lighting help support your decision.

That is the goal; however, due to the material difference, there will be changes in color and translucency. The permanent restoration usually looks more natural.

Practice varies by clinic; it is recommended that you get information before the process begins.
