Implant Treatment

Türkiye is one of the countries frequently preferred for dental treatment by our citizens living abroad and by international patients. However, since implant treatment requires a biological healing process, it may not be possible to complete it in a single visit. For this reason, good schedule planning is of great importance for the success of the treatment. Knowing the implant schedule for patients from abroad in advance allows you to plan your leave and travel accordingly. As DijiDent Oral and Dental Health Polyclinic, we offer our patients coming to Türkiye a transparent process that includes preliminary planning, a visit schedule and remote follow-up.

Why Might More Than One Visit Be Needed?

After the implant is placed, a period of a few months is waited for it to fuse with the bone. The permanent superstructure is made after this fusion is complete. This biological process cannot be accelerated; for this reason, in most cases at least two visits are planned: one for surgery and the other for making the permanent teeth. In cases requiring bone grafting, an additional stage may be needed.

Before You Come: Preliminary Evaluation

A preliminary evaluation done before coming to Türkiye allows the schedule to be planned more realistically.

  • Your images: If available, you can share your current panoramic X-ray or tomography images.
  • Photographs: Intraoral and smile photographs can help form a preliminary idea.
  • Health information: Your chronic illnesses, the medications you use and your allergies.
  • Expectations and time: How long you can stay in Türkiye and your priorities.

Based on this information, a possible treatment approach and visit schedule can be discussed in advance. However, the definitive treatment plan becomes clear after the clinical examination and the necessary imaging have been done. The preliminary evaluation does not replace an examination.

An Example Treatment Schedule

First Visit

  • Examination and tomography: Comprehensive evaluation and digital planning.
  • Preliminary treatments: Necessary extractions, gum treatment or fillings.
  • Implant surgery: Placement of the planned implants; bone grafting if necessary.
  • Temporary solutions: In suitable cases, temporary fixed teeth with immediate loading or a temporary prosthesis.
  • Check-up: At least one check-up and evaluation of the stitches before returning home.

Interim Period

During bone fusion, you continue your daily life in your own country. During this period, remote communication can be maintained by sharing photographs or images; if necessary, a check-up can be done by a dentist where you are.

Second Visit

  • Fusion check: Evaluating that the implants have fused with the bone.
  • Digital impression: Taking an impression with an intraoral scanner.
  • Production and try-in of the superstructure: Digital design and production technologies can shorten this process.
  • Placement of the permanent teeth: Bite adjustment and care training.

The duration of each visit varies according to the scope of the treatment. In extensive cases such as full-arch treatments, visits may be planned to be longer.

Options for Those Who Do Not Like Long Treatment Periods

In suitable cases, placing the implant in the same session as the tooth extraction and attaching a temporary tooth with immediate loading can ensure that you do not return home from the first visit without teeth. In situations requiring bone grafting, whether the graft and implant can be done in the same session is evaluated. These options can help reduce the total number of visits; however, they are not suitable for every case and the decision is determined by the clinical findings. Shortening the treatment period should never take precedence over safe healing.

Flying After Surgery

After standard implant surgery, waiting a few days before flying is generally recommended; during this time the swelling decreases and a possible problem can be noticed early. In patients who have had a sinus lift, a longer waiting period may be required due to pressure changes. It is important that you get a recommendation specific to your procedure from your dentist before planning your flight date.

What to Pay Attention to in the Interim Period

After returning to your own country, continue to follow the care recommendations given by your dentist. Do not bite hard foods with temporary teeth, clean the implant area gently and stay away from smoking. If you notice swelling, pain, loosening of a temporary tooth or signs of inflammation, inform the clinic immediately with photographs and a description; if necessary, it is recommended that you consult a dentist where you are.

Follow-Up in Your Own Country

When the treatment is completed, the implant card containing your implant information, the treatment summary and your images are shared with you. These documents make it easier for the dentist in the country where you live to continue your check-ups and care. The use of widely available implant systems is important in terms of the need for parts and service that may arise in the future. If you come to Türkiye regularly, we can plan your check-ups to coincide with your visits.

Tips to Make Your Planning Easier

  • Leave some flexibility in your schedule: Do not plan your return date too tightly in case of unexpected situations.
  • Bring all your medications with you: Prepare a list of the medications you use and your medical reports.
  • Adjust your holiday activities: In the first days after surgery, avoid swimming, staying in the sun for long periods and consuming alcohol.
  • Keep the contact information: Know how to reach the clinic for your questions after returning home.
