General Questions

What is teeth whitening?

It is the lightening of the natural color of the tooth by breaking down the color molecules in the internal structure of the tooth by means of peroxide-containing gels. Tooth tissue is not cut or abraded.

What methods are there?

The main methods are in-office whitening applied in the clinic, dentist-supervised at-home whitening applied at home with custom trays, the combined method in which both are used together, and internal whitening for root-canal-treated teeth.

Is an examination necessary before whitening?

Yes. Caries, gum disease, sensitivity and restorations are evaluated; the type of discoloration is determined and the method suitable for you is chosen. If necessary, professional cleaning is done first.

Safety

Does whitening damage the teeth?

When done under a dentist’s supervision and with appropriate protocols, it is not expected to cause permanent damage to the enamel structure. The most common side effect is temporary sensitivity.

Who should it not be done for?

It is generally not recommended or is postponed for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding, individuals under 18 years of age, those with untreated caries or gum disease, and those who are allergic to whitening products.

Can I use products I bought online at home?

Uncontrolled products can lead to sensitivity, gum irritation and uneven results. The safest option for whitening at home is dentist-supervised at-home whitening. Methods such as charcoal powder, baking soda and lemon, on the other hand, can damage the enamel.

Is whitening painful?

The procedure is not painful. In some patients, sensitivity in the form of a short-lived twinge may be felt during or after the procedure.

Process and Result

How long does whitening take?

In-office whitening usually takes a few hours in a single session; an additional session can be planned if necessary. At-home whitening requires a few weeks of regular use. With special discolorations such as tetracycline, the duration may be longer.

How many shades will my teeth lighten?

A definite number of shades cannot be given. The result varies from person to person according to the initial color, the type of discoloration and the structure of the teeth. The target is a natural lightness in harmony with your face.

Will my fillings and crowns whiten?

No. The color of restorations does not change. If necessary, they can be renewed to match the new color after the color has stabilized.

Is the result permanent?

It can be maintained for a long time; however, some return of color over time depending on habits is natural. The result can be maintained with good care and, when necessary, touch-ups under a dentist’s supervision.

Are whitening and dental cleaning the same thing?

No. Cleaning removes deposits and stains on the surface; whitening lightens the internal color of the tooth.

Sensitivity and Care

Does sensitivity occur after whitening?

Temporary sensitivity is common and usually decreases within a few days. Comfort can be increased with desensitizing products and choosing a suitable method.

What should I eat after whitening?

A white diet is recommended for the first 48 hours: stay away from tea, coffee, red wine, tomato paste, dark-colored foods and cigarettes.

How often can whitening be repeated?

The need for touch-ups is determined by the dentist according to habits and color measurement. Uncontrolled and frequent repetitions are not recommended.

Special Situations

One of my teeth is dark; will whitening work?

Color change in a single tooth usually originates from within and requires a special evaluation. Internal whitening can be applied to root-canal-treated teeth.

Can whitening be done after braces?

Yes, generally some time after the brackets have been removed and the surfaces cleaned. If there are white spots, treatment is planned separately.

I am coming from abroad; can I have whitening done?

In-office whitening can be applied during short visits after the examination and necessary preparations have been completed. At-home trays, once prepared and delivered, can be used in your own country in line with the dentist’s recommendations. If caries or gum treatment is needed, the schedule is planned accordingly.

Is light-activated whitening more effective?

There are differing views on the contribution of light; what mainly determines the result is the type and concentration of the gel used and the application protocol.
