Digital Smile Design

For patients living abroad, the most critical element of aesthetic treatment is time. Completing treatment in a limited visit is possible; however, this can only be carried out soundly if the process is planned in advance. The most common problem we encounter in the smile design process for patients from abroad is timelines set up too optimistically from the start. As DijiDent Oral and Dental Health Polyclinic, in Türkiye we carry out this planning within realistic limits.

Before You Come: Preliminary Evaluation

The process begins with you sharing your records. The records recommended for you to share are as follows:

  • Intraoral photographs: front view, right and left bite, upper and lower jaws
  • Facial photographs smiling and at rest
  • Panoramic film and, if available, three-dimensional tomography (as the original digital file)
  • An intraoral scan file, if available
  • Medical history: chronic diseases, medications you use, past treatments

Possible scenarios and an estimated timeline are discussed based on these records. However, this is a preliminary evaluation; gum consistency, tooth mobility and occlusal contacts can only be evaluated with a clinical examination. For this reason, we do not give a definitive plan or a definitive duration commitment without an examination.

Typical Timeline Scenarios

Single-Visit Scenario

If oral health is suitable, no preliminary treatment is needed and the plan covers a limited number of restorations, the process can be completed in a single visit. In this scenario, the first day involves the examination, records and design; the following days, the trial, preparation and temporary restorations; and then the try-in and cementation of the permanent restorations. This means a stay covering a few working days.

Two-Visit Scenario

If gum treatment, caries treatment or root canal treatment is needed, or if the gum level will be adjusted, a healing period is required. In this case, preliminary treatments and preparation are planned for the first visit and permanent restorations for the second visit. There is a waiting period between the two visits.

Long-Term Plan

In plans involving orthodontics or implants, the process extends over months. In these cases, the number of visits increases and the timeline is set up individually.

The Claim of “A Smile in Five Days”

In some selected cases, plans completed in a short time are possible. However, it is not correct to say that this can be applied to every patient. Compressing the stages can mean skipping steps such as the trial and tissue healing. Every skipped stage comes back as a fit or gum problem experienced after you return to your country. For this reason, we prefer to set up the timeline correctly rather than shorten it.

Flight and Treatment Timing

Planning a flight immediately after procedures involving surgery is not recommended; it is safer to be under clinical supervision in the first days of healing. We also recommend that you do not squeeze treatment days into the same days as a busy sightseeing program. Trial and fit sessions are important for you to be able to evaluate with a calm mind; hasty approvals can later turn into dissatisfaction.

What Should You Pay Attention to When You Arrive?

On the first day, a detailed examination is carried out and the plan discussed in the preliminary evaluation is compared with these findings. If the plan changes, it is shared with its rationale; application does not begin without your approval. We recommend that you do not book your return ticket too close to the last application day; it is important to leave a few days of buffer so that you can act comfortably if a revision is needed.

Follow-Up After Returning

When treatment is completed, we recommend that you get a digital copy of all your records: scan files, design records, information on the materials used and a treatment summary. In this way, you can document your treatment history in whatever country you are in. How check-ups will be carried out, in which situations you need to see a local dentist and the communication channels are clarified before you come.
