Orthodontics

Orthodontics is one of the areas of dentistry about which the most conflicting information circulates. What is heard from those around us, experiences of years ago and incomplete sources on the internet delay decisions or create wrong expectations. The list of orthodontic misconceptions has been compiled from the misconceptions our patients raise most often. As DijiDent Oral and Dental Health Polyclinic, we share this information openly for our patients in Türkiye.

“Orthodontics is only done for children and teenagers”

What is decisive is not age but gum and bone health. Tooth movement can also be achieved in adults. Since jaw development can be guided in children, some problems are solved more easily; however, this does not mean that adults cannot be treated.

“Wearing braces weakens the teeth”

Correctly applied orthodontic treatment does not weaken the teeth. The slight mobility felt in the teeth during treatment is a natural result of the change of position within the bone and disappears when the process is complete. The real risk is neglected care and the application of excessive force.

“When treatment ends, the job is done”

This is the most critical misconception. When the braces are removed, the retention stage begins. When a retainer is not used, the likelihood of the teeth returning to their old positions is high.

Retention is not an optional continuation of treatment but its mandatory final stage.

“Clear aligners can be applied in every case”

No. Clear aligners give effective results in many cases; however, they may be limited in complex root movements and pronounced skeletal problems. System selection is made not according to aesthetic preference but according to the requirements of the case.

“You can be treated with aligners bought online”

This is an approach that carries serious risks. Orthodontic treatment requires clinical examination, radiological evaluation, checking gum health and regular follow-up. Movements applied without these steps can lead to root resorption, gum recession and permanent bite problems. Treatment is not a product but a process.

“Orthodontics will relieve my jaw pain”

Jaw joint complaints have many factors and orthodontic treatment cannot be presented as their treatment. An indirect benefit may be seen in some cases; however, we recommend that you approach with caution approaches that promise definite results.

“If there is an extraction, my face will collapse”

In properly planned extraction treatments, no significant negative change is expected. In some cases, profile harmony may improve. The decision is based not only on space calculation but also on profile analysis.

“Non-extraction treatment is always better”

Avoiding extraction is not always more conservative. Bringing the teeth forward by pushing the bone limits may lead to gum recession and stability problems. What matters is choosing the plan suitable for the case.

“The pain is very severe”

Sensitivity is usually seen for a limited period and can be managed with simple measures. At subsequent check-ups, this feeling usually decreases. There is no need to postpone treatment because of fear of pain.

“With acceleration methods, the duration is halved”

Tooth movement is a biological process and cannot be accelerated without limit. Some methods can be considered in certain cases; however, promises of unusually short durations are not realistic.

“There are no caries during treatment”

On the contrary, the risk increases. The area around brackets accumulates plaque, and when care is neglected, permanent white spots and caries may develop. Oral care throughout treatment is at least as important as the treatment.

“Missing check-ups is not important”

There is a planned movement at each check-up appointment. A delayed appointment means postponing that movement and the total duration is prolonged. In addition, gum problems or bracket detachments that develop during treatment are only noticed at check-ups.

Questions You Can Ask the Clinic

  1. Which systems are suitable for my case, and why?
  2. If extraction is needed, what is the rationale, and have the alternatives been evaluated?
  3. What is the estimated duration and what could prolong it?
  4. Is my gum health suitable for treatment?
  5. What will my retention plan be and how long will it last?
  6. How often are check-up appointments planned?
